5 Children’s Books for Getting Kids Back Into Reading

Looking to get the kids back into reading is no easy task. After a summer filled with outdoor fun and games, it is tough to try and convince them to spend their time indoors, and reading no less. We have a selection of children’s books here at Midland Books that we recommend time and time again when parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and the like come looking for a good book to get kids reading. Here are some of our top books for getting kids back into reading;

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Mr Willy Wonka is the most extraordinary chocolate maker in the world. Augustus Gloop – a great big greedy nincompoop; Veruca Salt – a spoiled brat; Violet Beauregarde – a repulsive little gum-chewer; Mike Teavee – a boy who only watches television. Clutching their Golden Tickets, they arrive at Wonka’s chocolate factory.

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

This takes the form of Tom’s battered homework diary – crammed with his doodles and stories. Tom Gates is just like any other ten year old, not too different from you! Tom likes to doodle in his copies instead of focusing on his school work. Every day he deals with annoying classmates, brutish bullies and his grumpy sister.

War Horse by Michael Murpurgo

Before the Steven Spielberg film, before the National Theatre production, there was the classic children’s novel. The year is 1914 and a  young farm horse named Joey is sold to the army and finds himself in the middle of the war frontline. The book is narrated from the perspective of Joey.

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen and the White Rabbit all make their appearances, and are now familiar figures in writing, conversation and idiom. So too are Carroll’s delightful verses such as The Walrus and the Carpenter and the inspired jargon of that masterly Wordsworthian parody, The Jabberwocky.
